These steps and platform were made for the Ballet Theatre of Maryland‘s production of “Romeo & Juliet.” In the performance, the dancers would be running on and off as well as dancing on the platform, so it had to be sturdy and stable (no wheels!). But they also had to move the pieces on and off stage, so I needed to keep the weight down as much as possible. The steps are plywood boxes, but since they’re so big, I made each the steps so they could be stacked to make stairs but carried on/off stage separately. The platform is a 1×4 frame with 5 mm plywood sides but a thicker plywood top. Getting the paint job to look like stone took a few layers (and had to come close to an existing backdrop the ballet company already had), but in the end, l I think it turned out very nicely.
