Castle Wall

Wood & PVC, approximately 8' wide x 10' tall x 15" deep

This castle wall was built to be used as a background piece for the famous balcony scene in “Romeo & Juliet” for the Ballet Theatre of Maryland.  It is one of the largest pieces I’ve ever made.  The wall itself consists of two stackable 4’x8′ boxes with a railing on top.  All three pieces simply bolt together and can be separated for transport and storage.  The wall boxes are 2×2 frames with 5mm plywood on the downstage sides.  They’re open in the back and bottoms.  The railing is made of two plywood box newel posts (also open in the back) with square PVC tube balusters, all painted to look like stone.  This is the first time I’ve really tried to paint depth into stonework and I was shocked at what a difference it made.
