Moon’s Sign

My friend Steve, for whom I previously made a Ravens-Colts piece, asked me if I would make him something else for his house. It’s a sign of sorts, with his last name (Moon) and his and his wife’s first names. The years are when they “became Moons” (his birth and their wedding year). We sketched it out and finalized the design in Microsoft Publisher. That gave me the advantage of a selection of fonts for the text and I could draw it to scale. I then took a full-size print out of the letters and simply traced them onto the wood using carbon paper. He wanted a barnboard/slats look to the back, which I achieved using luan plywood with additional slats glued on top. The letters were cut out of a 3/4″ board. I primed everything with a lavender-shade of paint. My daughter dry-brushed the “slats” to give them a kind of wood grain. She also did all the detailed lettering, going over the carbon paper tracings with black paint, using a mechanical pencil dipped in paint for the delicate parts. Once everything was painted, the pieces to glued into place. It now hangs in a spot of honor on the way to Steve’s well-decorated man-cave.
