For The Catholic High School of Baltimore performance of “Arsenic and Old Lace,” the set included stairs used by many of the characters during the show. I was asked to build a half-wall with a decorative railing on top to hide the rough stairs they were using. No problem. They also asked if there was a way to raise all the set walls because the characters were taller than the tops of the walls when they used the stairs. I suggested we lower the stairs instead. Well, instead of modifying the existing stairs, and to increase future flexibility, I built a series of platforms that could be stacked. Now, they can make stairs from 8 inches high to 40 inches high or they could be used individually as platforms or in any number of other combinations. Given the new platforms, I built the half-wall modularly so it might work with various combinations of platforms.
