The sunrise at the beginning of the animated movie, the Lion King, is iconic and fits so well with the opening song “The Circle of Life.” At Broadneck Elementary’s production of “Lion King Kids,” a stylized sunrise made of one inch thick rigid foam insulation would serve as the backdrop for that number. Since the foam comes in 4 foot by 8 foot sheets, it was originally 8 feet in diameter for maximum effect. However, the stage is only 13 feet high and there would be a two-foot riser right in front of the sunrise (partially to hide the sunrise before it moved into place). To make it fit better, the 8 foot diameter sun was trimmed down to 5 feet. Given the black backdrop, you couldn’t even see the black fishing line between the slats. It looked great!
