The Catholic High School of Baltimore needed three orphanage beds for their spring 2018 performance of Annie. Since two actors would be sharing each bed in the scene (it’s a terrible orphanage, after all) and dancing on them, I needed to make sure they would be very sturdy. So I didn’t want to get clever like with Scrooge’s bed that folded up for storage. That meant the beds would be bulky (but relatively light), so I made them so they’d stack and turn into shelves as storage racks in the prop room. Bonus! As a nice little “Easter egg” touch, my daughter added “orphan graffiti” on the bed posts using the character names from previous Catholic High performances.
