Broadneck Elementary School was performing Seussical Kids and I was asked to provide some set pieces for the show. At one point, Yertle the Turtle (as a judge) passes judgement on Horton the Elephant. Given the Yertle the Turtle story (basically, he forces all the other turtles to stack up so he can be “greater” than everyone else), I thought a judge’s bench comprised of a turtle stack with enough elevation to make him taller than everyone else would be perfect. I picked a good representative image from the book as the basis of my drawing and created a scale-drawing on graph paper which was then transferred to luan plywood. The turtles were then framed with 1x3s which would keep them rigid but also allow me to connect them to the small set of steps behind them. The steps were just a 2×2 frame sheeted in plywood. The turtles got their Seuss-colored paint job and the steps were just flat black. The student performing as Yertle was soooo excited when he saw his turtle stack. I was pretty happy with it too.
