Broadneck Elementary School‘s performance of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr.” had a lot of help from the parents on scenery and props. I built these 2’x2′ platforms that could be used together or separately in a variety of configurations. They were used, in part, as the grandparents’ bed, but should be versatile in future performances. There were also a number of scene changes and these periaktoi provided three sides of painted flats for quick-change backgrounds. The only downside is they take up a lot of space.
When I was working with the Wicked Woods, a friend of mine would make all sorts of amazing things for both the Woods and school productions. I asked him to build a few things for Wonka Jr. and he did not disappoint. This camera for Mike Teevee’s big scene was about six feet long, six feet tall, and featured working lights. The candy machine had about $200 worth of electronics in it and everything on it rotated, slid, or blinked when you threw the giant knife switch. Just too awesome not to share!
