Why Stage & Scream Design?

You may be wondering, what’s up with name of this website?  Stage & Scream Design?  Well, I’ve been thinking about putting together a site where I could showcase the things I’ve built over the years.  I suppose I could have used some version of my own name since it is my work, but that seemed kind of boring.  I wanted it to represent what I was doing and be a little descriptive.  And I wanted it to be just a little bit clever.  The problem is, I’m terrible with names.

Ask my wife.  Naming our children was a whole process with so many criteria to meet (mostly my fault), it’s a wonder they have names at all.  Our son’s name actually wasn’t decided until shortly after he was born and even then, he ended up with a name I had originally crossed off the list.  (By the way son, if you’re reading this, I’m very happy with the name we gave you.)

So it was a long time before I finally found a name I liked for the website.  And it actually just came to me as I was waking up one day.  “Stage and Scream” was kind of a play on the celebrity-describing phrase “star of stage and screen.”  I liked it so much I jumped out of bed so I could write it down.  I worked through a couple of minor variations which led to adding the “Design” portion so it would be more descriptive.  Fortunately for me, the domain name was available.

The “stage” portion is kind of obvious.  I’ve made a lot of different scenic pieces for a number of theatrical performances.  The “scream” portion represents the work I put into designing, building, and running the Wicked Woods haunted attraction.  That’s what really got me hooked.  And while I haven’t made too many haunt-related props recently, I wanted to capture the beginning of my journey.  (Look for the story of my very first Wicked Woods scene in a future post.)
